Kentucky's Daniel Boone National Forest in the eastern part of the state covers 700,000 acres of Cumberland Plateau terrain, providing the most extensive public OHV riding in the commonwealth. The eastern Kentucky hills, hollows, and sandstone formations create legitimate off-road challenges that attract riders from across the Ohio Valley region. Combined with a growing private OHV facility network, Kentucky offers more than riders from neighboring states typically realize.
Kentucky OHV Laws
Kentucky requires OHV registration through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for operating on public land and designated trails. The registration decal must be displayed on the vehicle. Kentucky OHV registration is annual.
Kentucky requires helmets for OHV riders under 18. No adult helmet requirement for off-road OHV use in Kentucky. No driver's license is required for off-road OHV operation. Riders under 16 must be supervised by an adult on public land.
Where to Ride in Kentucky
Daniel Boone National Forest, Cave Run Lake Area (Morehead)
The Cave Run Lake area of the Daniel Boone National Forest in Rowan County is the most accessible and popular OHV destination in Kentucky. The Zilpo Recreation Area and surrounding forest road network provide staged access to intermediate terrain through eastern Kentucky sandstone hill country. The lake setting adds scenic value to what is already varied and engaging trail terrain for intermediate to advanced riders.
Daniel Boone National Forest, Redbird District (Manchester)
The Redbird District of the Daniel Boone NF in Clay and Leslie Counties in southeastern Kentucky has some of the most remote OHV terrain in the forest. The Redbird Crest Trail corridor provides access to deep Cumberland Plateau country with steep ridge climbs, creek crossings, and the isolated character of the Kentucky mountains. This is intermediate to advanced terrain in a genuinely remote environment.
Kentucky Horse Park and Red River Gorge Corridor
The Red River Gorge Geological Area in Powell County is adjacent to OHV-accessible forest service roads, though the Gorge itself is designated wilderness and closed to motorized use. Forest roads surrounding the Gorge access to the Red River Gorge provide scenic riding in the sandstone arch country of eastern Kentucky. Contact the Stanton Ranger District for current designated OHV-accessible routes in the corridor.
Private OHV Facilities
Private OHV facilities in central and western Kentucky serve riders who do not want to make the drive to the Daniel Boone NF. Facilities in the Elizabethtown, Louisville, and Lexington areas provide day-use access on course networks and maintained trail systems. Search for Kentucky ATV parks for current private facility options.
Practical Tips for Kentucky Riding
Kentucky riding season is April through November. Eastern Kentucky clay soils become very muddy after rain, and Daniel Boone NF trails implement seasonal closures in wet periods to protect trail surfaces. Fall is the best season for Kentucky riding, with excellent foliage in October and dry trail conditions in most years. Check Daniel Boone NF trail status before every trip to eastern Kentucky.
The Right Bike for Kentucky
Daniel Boone NF terrain suits the Altis Sigma for intermediate riders and the Altis Omega for riders exploring the more remote Redbird District sections. Private facility riding suits any Altis model depending on experience level. VoroMotors is available seven days a week to help you plan the right setup for Kentucky riding.
