10 Reasons a Bigger Electric Scooter Beats a Cheap Amazon Scooter Every Time

A cheap Amazon scooter looks like a deal until it fails. Here are ten reasons a bigger, quality electric scooter is safer, lasts longer, climbs hills, and costs less over time.

The $300 electric scooter looks like a great deal until you have owned one for a season. Then the range drops, the brakes fade, a bolt rattles loose, and the seller you bought it from has vanished. A bigger, properly built scooter costs more up front, but it is almost always the cheaper, safer, and more satisfying choice over the years you actually ride it. Here are ten reasons why.

1. The price literally cannot buy a good scooter, so a corner always gets cut

This is not an opinion. It is arithmetic. Let us follow the money on a $300 scooter.

Start with where these are built. The overwhelming majority of budget electric scooters are assembled in the coastal manufacturing hubs of southern China, places like Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Dongguan. And here is the part most people get wrong: factory labor there is not almost free. A worker in those coastal hubs costs roughly $8.50 to $12.30 an hour once you include the required social insurance. Now use America's lowest legal wage as the yardstick. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour and has not moved since 2009, and a few states set their own minimum as low as $5.15 on paper. In other words, a worker assembling scooters in a Chinese coastal hub often earns more than someone working a minimum wage job in the United States. Cheap overseas labor is not what makes a $300 scooter possible.

That is right, the factory worker often out-earns US minimum wage. Cheap labor is not the reason a $300 scooter exists. After the roughly 15 percent marketplace fee, freight, import duty, and everyone's profit, there is almost nothing left for safe cells, real brakes, and proper testing.

So now do the math on the $300. The marketplace takes its cut first, and a typical online marketplace referral fee is around 15 percent, so about $45 comes off the top before anyone builds anything. The seller needs a profit. The factory needs a profit. Freight across the Pacific and US import duties take another bite. By the time you reach the actual factory floor, the money left to build the product is a fraction of the sticker price. Then the single most expensive part, the battery, can eat roughly a third of the build cost on its own. Now add a motor, a controller, a frame, brakes, tires, a charger, and packaging.
