How to Eliminate Stem Wobble on the Teverun Space Electric Scooter

A wobbly handlebar on the Teverun Space almost always comes down to two loose bolts on the folding stem hinge. Here's how to check for it and tighten it back up properly.

A little side-to-side play in the handlebars is one of the most common things riders notice after a few weeks on a folding electric scooter, and on the Teverun Space it almost always comes down to the same fix: two bolts on the side of the folding stem hinge, just under the neck, that have worked themselves loose from normal vibration. Here is how to check for it and tighten it back up properly.

Check for Wobble First

Before you tighten anything, confirm that is actually the problem. With the scooter powered off and the stem locked upright in the riding position, stand in front of the scooter, grip the front wheel firmly between your legs or against a wall, and grab the handlebars. Try to rock the stem forward and backward. Any clunk or play you feel is coming from the folding hinge just below the neck, the same spot you tighten on the Space.

Find the Two Bolts

On the Teverun Space, the folding hinge sits where the stem meets the deck, right below the neck and next to the red folding lever. Look at the side plates of that hinge housing and you will see two bolts, one on each side. These are the bolts that clamp the hinge together. Over time, vibration from normal riding works them loose, which is what lets the stem rock.

What You Will Need

Use the hex key (Allen wrench) or Torx bit that matches the bolts on your unit, whichever came in your included tool kit or is listed in your owner's manual. Make sure the tool seats fully into the bolt head before you turn it. A tool that does not fit snugly can round out the bolt head, which makes the job much harder later.

How to Tighten Them Properly

  1. Power off the scooter and unfold it into the normal riding position, with the folding lever fully locked.
  2. Insert your hex key or Torx bit into one of the two side bolts and turn it clockwise in small increments, about an eighth of a turn at a time.
  3. Switch to the bolt on the opposite side and give it the same small increment. Go back and forth between the two, the same way you would tighten lug nuts on a wheel, so the clamping force stays even on both sides of the hinge.
  4. After every couple of passes, stop and recheck for wobble using the same test from the first step.
  5. Stop tightening as soon as the play is gone and the stem feels solid. The folding lever should still open and close smoothly. Do not keep cranking the bolts as tight as you can get them, since overtightening can crack the housing or strip the threads.

Test Before You Ride Normally

Take a short, slow ride in an open, safe area before getting back to your normal riding speed. Recheck both bolts after your first couple of rides, since newly tightened hardware can settle in slightly as it seats.

When It Is More Than the Bolts

If you have tightened both bolts fully and the stem still wobbles, that usually points to worn bushings or a worn pivot pin inside the hinge itself, not something you can fix by tightening further. Forcing the bolts tighter at that point will not solve it and risks damaging the housing. That is a job for a technician, not more torque.
